After too much thinking and not enough action, I started my ammo can console yesterday. It was really spurred on when I scored a good Pioneer head unit for $10 at a semi-local wrecking yard. My plan is to mount the radio in the console...that's today's project. I'll post more later.

The can is a large one, with a full removable lid ($20 at mil surplus store). It probably would have been a whole lot easier to cut the bottom of the can off and fab some brackets to mount the can to, but I liked the idea of creating a "sump" to store my winch remote and stuff in.

The whole thing fits really well between my gas tank and the tool box.

    More to come.

Great idea. I need someplace to put my CB and stuff and was thinking of something like this, maybe removable. Well done!

I dod the same thing in a 78 CJ5 many years ago except I left the can stock and used hood catched to secure it to the floor. 20 MM cans have many uses.

BTW, There is also a 40 MM can which is the same basic dimensions except only about half as deep. Ammo cans are good!

Got a little more done yesterday...but it's far from finished.

I used another pizza box to make a template for the radio surround, but it needs more grinding and fitting than I had time for. My plan is to have a hinged "lid" just to the rear of the radio. So, when you take the lid off of the ammo can, there will be a nice carpeted lid/arm rest with a radio beneath it. The radio is sunk down a bit so the ammon box lid clears it. I'm also going to mount some cigarette lighters/power outlets in there for the XM radio and MP3 player and whatever else needs it. But that will be next week...

Ok, I'm ripping that last part off too...

OT- I hadn't noticed your location before - I used to love to take my old YJ from Moosehead to Katahdin on the Golden Road.

Small wolrd...cool. Things have change a bit. There are more conservation easements and land holdings, so less logging is happening. For the Golden Road that means less traffic...well, fewer log trucks and more rafters and anglers. Very few of the huge oversize log trucks left compared to just a few years ago. Still, it's a real nice area.

That is cool. The sump would make a good place to stash the wiring.
