Last week I had to do winch duty pulling trees down. No biggie, and a lot of fun. Somehow I came to the conclusion that it isn't normal for the right front to leak brake fluid. Plus the brakes are worse than ever (duh).
Time for some repairs! I dropped into Napa and ordered a replacement cylinder and then took the jeep apart.... oops.

It would seem that I have a 1" cylinder up there, and they sent me a 3/4.
I am not going to downgrade, plus the pistons are different (no ears).
I will be returning this to napa, and try and get the right one.

9" brakes are all I have, and there isn't any $$$ to swap it out now.
31" tires are no worse than the 30" I had, I can still slow it down.

While I am wrenching on it, I might as well yank the rear axles out of the 62 parts jeep and see if they are in better shape.... I have a pretty loud clunk from a loose key back there! I would love to go to 1 piece shafts, but the $$$ thing gets in the way again.

Isn't it just great working on 40 something old jeeps??? ;)

You can rebuild the cylinder if it's not water pitted. I'd only do this if you're really short on cash though - my batting average on rebuilding wheel cylinders is about .500 that they last longer than a month or two.

You should be able to find a used 2-piece axle (wheel to wheel) for not much money. Nobody will want them but those that just want to keep their Jeeps running (like you).

One piece axles have to be custom made. (For the offset 44) You'll be lucky it you find used ones. I'm still waiting for mine to be built. It's been over two months and they tell me I'll get them this coming week. Maybe.
