    hi.
I need help with fixing a fuel leak in my cj.
its a 360 v8, the guy that sold it to me put on a electric fuel pump, and its leaking from what I think is the original fuel pump.

its leaking from a hole on the side of the thing that I circled in the direction of the arrow.
it kind of drips out onto the motor and if I tap the hole with my finger a bunch more gas comes out.

can I just bypass the original fuel pump?
I was told that I can't do that if the electric pump doesn't have a regulator in it. :? if thats true, how could I check if it does?

if I can, if I need to plug the holes where the hoses plug into the pump now, how would I do that?

or is there some sort of block off plate that I could buy to just take off the pump completely?

    what do you all suggest?

heres the electric pump and a couple more of the other one

    well you asked...
personally, I would do away with the electic pump altogether, and just use the stock manual pump. The manual pump on the engine now is bad, and should be replaced, as you have noticed. I would run steel line between the tank and the pump, leaving just short 10" sections of rubber hose for flex on both ends if possible.
I would install a filter between the tank and the pump.
I would route the hose away from the exhaust as much as possible, and not let any hose rub on the steering shaft, which might be happening now as evidenced in the pics.
The way the PO has it plumbed now suggests to me he may have had a vapor lock problem.

:iagree: Get rid of the pump and get a new stock one.
I wouldnt drive it like that.
You have parts of 2 fueling systems that dont really belong together.
Without going into great detail you are using the mechanical pump as a regulator and its starting to fail.
Nothing will hold the electric pump back from pumping gas all over the place if it fails.
Electric pumps have there place but this isnt really needed for your our application.
A car designed around one has several fail safes in place like in an accident to turn it off.

The mechanical pump work's just fine and is safer and cheaper in the long run.

    hard steel line
    like brake line
you could do it all in rubber, but that's a long run and always a chance for a crack in the hose.
Keep sharp body edges away from the fuel lines, steel or rubber.

Good advice, those pumps aren't the best quality, but I would leave it there for a backup.

Dont bother with the summit pumps, go to you locla napa, or autozone or whatever and get a replacement, it will be cheaper and you dont have to ship it.

FYI, AMC only used 2 different pumps on most of its engines, so they will have one in stock. Its best to bring your original pump with you, sicne they will invariably give you the other one, no matter how hard you try :D. Ask me how I know.
