Just reinstalled my original speedometer cluster with new fuel/temp gauges. Mileage set properly and all is well...except......

The main reason I removed the cluster was to fix the speedometer. It had totally stopped registering. The cable was the culprit. At the transmission end, the cable was sheared about six inches from the threaded coupler. After replacing the cable, the speedometer worked, but erratically, with a lot of bouncing at low speed.

After removing the cluster, I tried turning the cable from the cluster end and it was extremely tight and binding and I'm sure that is where the trouble lies. With both ends disconnected the cable turns freely and I thoroughly lubricated the cable with lithium grease.

My question is.....How hard it is to correct the problem in the transmission itself. Does it have to be disassembled , or is it a fairly easy job ?

    Thanks !!

that is how it should be as you can't turn the gear in the transfer case.
both ends disconnected, should turn freely.

If you remove the cable at the transfer case end, you can then put a wrench on the adapter the cable attaches to; with this removed, you can then pull out the driven gear and inspect it for wear and/or damage. With a light and small mirror, you can inspect the drive gear teeth inside the transfer case through that small hole opening.
If the drive gear is damaged, then disassembly of the rear of the transfer case will be needed as the drive gear is on the output shaft.

Appreciate the response and the diagram. Your response answered a lot of questions.

What does it take to remove the adapter from the transfer case ? It appears that a 7/8" deep-well socket would get it, but I can't even get a socket over the adapter; the socket is just too thick.

Is a special tool required to remove the adapter (thin-wall socket) or can it be done in another way.......thanks !

    most likely thin wall socket
    channellocks if you're careful
