Can I notch my HEI dist.?

I have my HEI installed, and due to clearance issues have the vac adv. pointing down, It almost runs right, (still a little sluggish), so I need a little more advance, but the wires coming out of the dis, housing are hiting my intake. Is there any problems with notching my distr and running my wires out of a new spot closer to where vac advance comes out?

    Notch the distributor? I wouldn't!

Instead I'd get it installed properly so you don't have any problems.

You need to rearrange it so it's not an issue. Pull it out, and drop it back in so you can time it correctly.

There's no need to do anything to the distributor when installing HEI, only grinding on the intake and bolt.

That's what I was suggesting needed to be adjusted. Guess I wasn't clear enough with my description.

Nah, I should've added what you said to my post as well. Sometimes I get too wordy and forget to cut to the chase.

    Yes, you can!
You can buy an adjustable vacuum advance unit or ask for a factory unit and specify the vacuum tube orientation.

The vacuum canisters are available from NAPA or FLAPS. You can get em with the nipple out the side or end. When I looked at the book there were several pages of them.

Note - the main difference (besides nipple location) was the pressure rating. I could not figure out what psi I needed so I gave up and didn't buy one. Does anyone know if 225 OF with HEI would work better with higher or lower psi rating on the vacuum advance canister?

You might read Rich Mott's article that I've linked to in the 225 portion of the tech section.

I've an adjustable cannister on mine dialed all the way down. Comes directly out the end, no problems with clearance anywhere.

I second the idea of reading Riches writeup(s). I printed them and keep them in a binder in the garage.

I'm not interested in using the adjustable setup (yet). By having the vacuum cannister "dialed down" is that more similar to a lower or higher rated unit? Just trying to decide to buy the 5 lb or 8 lb unit (just guessing at these numbers).

Dunno. I just bought an adjustable unit like the article said and didn't worry about it. R)

    It wasn't much, $25 maybe.

The one in the pics is from a buick skyhawk.
My parts car, and would think it was stock.
