What causes an engine to continue running for a few seconds after you shut off the ignition switch? Timing or Carburetion?

Now that the weather has warmed up here, my jeep runs on if I leave the choke out. In that instance I would say it is the carb.

I thought is was caused by the timing being advanced too much.

    vac leak
    excessive fuel
    too high idle setting
    poor fuel quality
carbon builup on pistons/in combustion chamber
    any/all of the above
unleaded fuel has helped reduce carbon buildup

Agree with Jim. any number of things can cause it. i would add to this list a bad diode in the alternator allowing electricity to keep the coil hot once the key is turned off.

a lot of the time, it's carbon build up. Seen it in the homeowner market of lawnmowers. Get some EDTA to put in the cylinders through the spark plug hole, let it work for a few hours, and then fire it up. A lot of the time it can be found at tractor supply places. I use the Stihl brand because I'm a Stihl dealer... but I'm sure most of the brands will work. Warning: Be sure to have plenty of fresh air when you do; the fumes are tremendously strong. Also, don't leave it too long, it can go down to the crankcase and make for some nasty sludge...
