ok guys i need a favor.

i am building a cj6 and do not yet have a top. i want a bestop (because they are the only manufacturer i have found, lol) i want to take it to have the cage put in it now and then maybe buy the top before the snow flies.

so what i need is somebody that has their soft top on now to give me some measurements.

i would like height and width at the very back by the tailgate, then on the backside of the door opening (behind the front seat and in front of the back seat.) and then maybe again at the windsheild frame. i am sure the last measurement would be dictated by the windsheild but anyway. please measure from the top of the tub. i have a glass body and am concerned about differances in the wheel wells.

lastly if anybody can help i would appreciate any heads up on what i should look out for with the cage to top issues. thanks in advance.

Sorry I can't help...it'll be a long time before I get the softop back on, and my cage isn't positioned well to measure things at this point.

One design decision is regarding the bows for the soft top -- do you want to be able to leave them hinged and swing them down when folding the top down, or can you put up with having to pull them from the hinge in order to bring the top down?

This will determine how far back the top/rear part of your cage can be. Build the cage too long or high and the soft top bow won't be able to get past it without pulling it from the hinge.

If you look at my rollcage pics you can see that my cage doesn't go all the way back to the rear of the body - and it was done that way so the top bows could swivel down without having to pull them from the hinges. Visually I would have liked the cage to go all the way back, I kinda got talked into this design. I haven't driven the Jeep enough to know how often I'd be putting the top up and down - so far it's been either on completely or off completely.

It still meets my main criteria - that I (at 6'3") could sit in the rear seat and have enough leg room and headroom under the rollcage.

thanks mike i had hoped you would reply. i did print off the pictures of your cage from your website.

as far as the bows, my top will go on once a yr, and off once ayr. so i dont care if they hinge. i am lucky enough to have a spot in the garage!

One thing you may want to consider is not using the bows at all, or at least not the complete bows. This is something that I'm thinking about since I was not smart enough to look ahead like Mike did when he built his cage. My front bow would work with no issues but my rear hoop will get in the way as it is too wide and tall. Remeber that the top narrows slightly at the rear so a cage that goes straight back along the body lines might get in the way. For my option I'm going to add some bosses on the rear hoop for a small (very short) rear bow that can be removed completely when the top is not on.

This will leave me with the issue that I can't put the top down, with the bows but like most everyone else the top is either on or off. The other good thing about this is the lack of hardware mounted to your body. You will need some for the door openings but you can eliminate some.

    Just my 2cents..........
