AAARRGH!!! Blown 258 Engine Help!

I can see both sides.
But if you do want to do something, give him the $$.
Finding the engine really isn't even your problem.
Reimburse him and let it go. He has ebay and craigslist just as well as you.
Its not your jeep anymore, its his, and its his problem.
(don't mean to be harsh, I know we all care for our jeeps).

The other guys are right. You don't owe him anything.
And you sure don't owe him this time, effort, and worrying.

I bet you a shiny nickel that if the tables were turned you'd get squat from him.

 

Can you imaging if everyone took that approach….

It’s not so much about the guy that bought the Jeep more so it’s about ******* and how he feels. My guess is that he sleeps well at night.

 

"Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself". It doesn't always work, but I try my best. I would hope that he would help me if the tables were turned. This way I can say that I did more than I had to.

He doesn't know much about Jeeps, so I can find an engine in a day or so, where it might take him weeks. The sooner I get one, the sooner I WILL be able to sleep well at night.

I do appreciate everyone's support on the issue. Its always good to know you guys are here if I need anything.

I appreciate your thoughts on this matter, BUT,,,, what is going to happen if you do find him a motor, and that one blows also???? You are definatly "between a rock and a hard place" !!

 

He over revvv it ,for a rod to let go at low speed it would thash around the oil pan and dent it or jam up ..over revv it and the rod let go it will go through the block.. I did both ..Just give him a couple hundth and that it .. He was just trying to see how strong the engine was or showing off to the gang ...

 

When buying a 30 yr old vehicle, one should take into consideration what it would cost to replace the engine, trans., ect. when deciding how much to give for it.

 

X2, I've been burned being the nice guy a few times, but it hasn't stopped me. On the other hand I hope the buyer has respect for *******, noble thing he's doing.

Do what makes you feel good. Then you will know in your heart that you made an attempt to make things good. Just let him know that in giving him a partial refund, it is no admission on your part that you knowingly sold him an engine that was ready to blow.

Good lesson here ... when you sell a used car, make it clear that the sale is as is and no warranty is expressed or implied.

In the case of AvianMan, I think if you implied a warranty or you feel obligated, you should do what you can (within the limits of your conscience), as cheaply as you can, to get clear of this deal. If you can find a local used engine for the new owner, that will be the cheapest route. Then you can rebate to him the $100 or $200 it should cost ... no labor!

 

Unless you knew the engine was on its deathbed and didn't tell him, I agree that AS IS is as is. I wouldn't be too surprised if he'd tried to wheel it, or "test its limits" in the cul-de-sac and found them, not realizing the older engines didn't have torque limiters like the newer ones. But do as you fell is best, of course.

You don't owe him a dime. If it makes you feel better that is another story.
