I know, I know! I have a lot of questions, but this forum has been absolutely awsome! I have a 1973 CJ5 with a 304 AMC that originally came with dual exhaust. While we were installing the new engine and tranny, we had to cut out the passenger side exhaust the get it all installed. The mufflers and pipes were about gone, so its no big deal. What I want is quiet without compromising engine performance too much. The muffler guy I was talking to says that he can do a single exhaust with 2.5 inch pipe that should work well for my application. Is this correct? Also, what muffler do you reccomend for quiet and decent performance? Thanks, Doc

    Hi,
Dual exhaust was never factory from what i understand, but that dosent really matter here. 2.5" pipe sould be fine for what you are doing, since the factory pipe for the v8's was probably about 2" single. For a quiet0ish muffler with decent performance, i'd reccomend a flomaster 60 delta or 70 series. They are fairly quiet, with a nice deep tone. IF you are looking for even less sound than that, look into a factory 2000+ dodge ram muffler, but they are huge. You are limited by space really, since the cj is a small vehicle.

    good luck,
    -Dante

I just moved my duals out the back from a previous side exit. It is loud with cherry bomb type mufflers, but since I put it out the back, it is much less irritating, and I really like the sound.

That's what i'm running now. I've got 2" true duals from the manifolds that end in cherrybombs. I never even took the time to make an H pipe, I spent enought time bending the pipes so they sit in above frame rails as it was. Its loud, but its badazz.

Flowmaster Extremes. Very small, 3/8" diamond plate outer skin, excellent sound, priced about the same as other Flowmasters. I have a single 2.5" exhaust on a Dauntless thats completely tucked in the frame rails and exits rear corner. See here:http://http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44090

I think you're going in the right direction. 2.5 in. should work fine and, Flowmaster makes a nice 60 series that has one inlet and two outlets if you want the dual look!!
