I am having a hard time with the timeing. Set it at 5* btdc with the vac. advance unpluged on the hei. motor sounds fine till you give it the gas it starts to backfire and no power when driving. Move the timeing to 0 or 5 atdc more power and less spitting and suddering but its still not runing as it should. any sugestions?

    Re: 225 timeing

Maybe timing is not your issue.... I run mine at about 12* @7500 Ft. elevation with Pertronix and MSD Blaster coil. I ran it at Tellico (2600 Ft. or so IIRC) and it still ran fine.

You might want to check timing chain.remove distributer cap and rock crankshaft with socket and ratchet.if crank is rotating and dist. is not (for a few degrees) you might have a loose chain or worn gears.

Just a thought-check your wires. Sounds a lot like a couple of plug wires out of sequence.:v6:

checked the plug wires again today. They are in order. The only thing I have noticed so far is the vaccuum is not steady swings from 15 to 20 inches. And when the advance is pluged in the timeing retards from 5*btdc to 20 and I don't see it move in the advance direction when the engine is reved. up. and the vac. drops.

Hmm, when mine was 180* out it ran perfectly. Just sluggish, passenger side exhaust was cold.

Fast movement on the vacuum. I don't think i am 180 out but it don't hurt to check it again.

This sounds a lot like the problem I'm having- I have a huge bog just off idle. I recommend disconnecting the vacuum advance for now - just plug the line from the carb. It's not a big deal to run without it. My timing is set at 5 degrees.

I worked on the problem (for the umpteenth time) Saturday. Checking the manifold vacuum at idle (650 rpm) the needle moves rapidly from 15" to 18". Slowly bringing the speed up to 2000 rpm the needle moves to a steady 20". The instructions that came with the vacuum gauge said the problem is 1)ignition system or 2)low speed adjustment on carb. I still haven't figured out the problem but I hope this helps you in some way.

Please post if you make any progress.

pulled the driverside valve cover off today and verified im not 180* out with the dist. plug wires correct. Drove it with the vac. adv. disconected idles fine but on acceleration still have no power on take off, picks up a litttle in second till about 20mph then it stumbles and starts to backfife through the exhaust. I guess i will check for vacuum leaks again and see if i can get it to hold a steady reading.

Check for vacuum leaks with the gage on, that's how I found mine finally.

found and fixed my problem today and it is running great. Must have had a bad day when I installed the spark plugs the gap wasn't even close. opened the gap up vacuum quit swinging. and all the backfireing went away.
