    hey guys,

i am getting ready to mount the tail lights and reverse lights on my 73 cj5. i bought the factory replacements from 4wd hardware.

my question is about the height. originally the reverse lights were about as high as the could be and the tail lights were about as low as they could be. is this correct? anybody have any better ideas?

i had thought about putting the tail lights as high as i could get them so they would be more visible. dont really need this jeep to be period correct. just functional!
oh yeah what about the rear sidemarker lights?

I can tell you how my lights are configured, but not if its correct.

I have the taillights on top, with the back-up lights just above the bumper.
This does make sense when you think about the fact that:
    A) It makes them more visible
    B) The license plate illuminator cutout requires that the taillights be above the license plate.

But I suppose that all depends on where you mount your license plate.

Taillight was originally centered maybe 3-4 inches above the bottom lip of the body (that's why they've been smashed so often). Backup was up high. Fuel filler is between them, all in line vertically. License plate on the left under the taillight, on a bracket that goes between the body and the taillight.

If you have original sheet metal, look at the inside of the fender and you may see the original holes for light mounting.

Pretty good pick of the light placement from a post on the Off Topic forum:

This is a 70 or 71 but the placement is the same.

I agree about switching the positions of the taillights and backup lights, plus I might add a third brake light to the middle of the spare tire mounting.:coffee:
