Need advice on removing the ring gear before I break something. 75 CJ w/304. The axle is out, the axle shafts are out, diff cover removed and bearing caps are off.

I thought I should be able to wiggle it out, but I can't get anything to move. Am I missing something? A pin or ???. I had metal chunks in the gear oil but I can see nothing chipped on the gears the I can see. It didn't make any noise while driving either. Any ideas greatly appriecated.

You are having problems getting the carrier out? They are an interference fit. Only about .010. I use a couple different methods. A case spreader would be the cats behind, I no gots one. I use either a 2 arm puller with a piece of angle iron supported on something to hold it across the case. The jaws can than attach to the carrier. I have also used one or two pry bars with great success.

I usually use prybar under one of the ring gear bolt heads. Should come right out. I've setup several 44's and 30's and even with .015" bearing preload, I've never had to use a case spreader.

Ok, thought it should come out fairly easy. I'll go back now and give it another try.

    Thanks for the comments.
