When installing the front wheel bearings on drum brakes the book I have says to bend over part of the washer on to one of the flats on the spindle nut to keep it from backing off. How do you bend it over? I tried with a screw driver but I had no luck bending it out over the last nut. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I use a small pry bar and then a chisel....very carefully.

Maybe I've been doing it wrong...but I usually bend it in over a flat on the inner nut.

The book says to bend one side in on the inner nut and one side out on the other nut. Seems that it would be easier to bend it in than out. Does it need to go over both nuts?

IIRC, the washer goes between the two nuts. it is a little tougher bending out over the outer nut, but it makes it much easier to remove the next time. you know that herkimer (technical term) flatblade screwdriver that comes in all sets, about half an inch thick and foot and a half long? works great to pry out on them. it does not have to be flat against the nut, just in the way of the flat so the nut can't back off.
