I have a 65 CJ that has a drum at the end of the tranfer case for the parking brake. Problem is that it doesn't have a parking brake handle inside the jeep. Does anyone know where to find one and have any pictures of how to mount it and how to route the cable to the lever on the drum. I would really like to get this working instead of putting a block of wood under the wheel. Thanks for any help!

I am told that this is a very hard part to fine. I was fortunate to get one
but since it is a cable system and the left side of the tub is such that you could modify any foot operated emergency brake found at a junkyard. This is what I am going to try to do with the 1955

I found a foot operated one on Ebay for my '73 and have seen several others since. It may not be original for your jeep but could probably be made to work. I've also seen several generic hand operated ones as well.

Stock is the umbrella handle? That style was used on F-series Ford trucks in the early 60s, and probably on a lot of other vehicles in that era. May not be original exactly, but it might look stockish (if it doesn't say "Ford" on the handle!).

I have a couple of handles. Will these work for you? Attaches to the bottom of the dash and at the firewall. You'd have to rig up or buy your own cable.

When your brakes fail as mine have once so far. And I find myself trying to find a whole to drive off the road, instead of running through a four-way stop sign. Stock really wouldn't matter. definitely find something until you can find a stock handle. If that matters to you. It's a scary feeling when you brakes fail.

Keep in mind...these were designed as "parking brakes", and not "emergency brakes".

I know..any port in a storm...but behind a "probably leaking" D18 I wouldn't bet my life on the parking brake.

That's part of the reason why I switched to the foot pedal for mine. If I had to use it to stop the Jeep, I'd have a better chance at it by stomping my foot down rather than pulling on the handle. Still, it is not an Emergency Brake, as already mentioned.

I know they don't work much better than having first gear synchronized. But at the time I had neither. In a grid city like Tucson. Sometimes there's no were to drive off the road without hitting a pedestrian or a concrete wall. Anything to reduce the impact that may be inevitable.

    This got me thinking.

I'm not sure, it'd help, but I'm not sure I'd want to try to apply the brake in our VW from a high rate of speed. It only works on the rear wheels...

Here's the handle assembly I bought from another '56, before it was removed. Different handle and bracket than your '65, most likely, but it's something to compare with.

:? "that style" in Fords refers to the umbrella handle, not your post.

Great price for the part in your post though. Can't beat that even at the pick-yur-part.

Adam Sparks makes a good point, when I build a custom parking, emergency brake. I will probably set it up. So it will not have a ratcheting system, and you can pump it. And since the city of Tucson is basically flat. I would probably not use it for parking, but I might add a spring-loaded lever that can be locked into the ratcheting area of the rod, if necessary
