73 CJ5 Exhaust Question

Ok, so after a long winter I'm starting back into my project.

I got the engine running great this winter.
New ignition, New fuel tank, new fuel pump, rebuild carb, filter
New Oil Pump

Next on my list is the Exhaust.
The exhaust header appears to be in good shape, but thats all there is.

Oh, by the way, I have a 232.

I have never had much occasion to mess with exhaust and consequently know very little about how my jeep's exhaust should go together.

What are the parts, in order? (gaskets are a given)
Exhaust Pipe, Cat??, more pipe, muffler, tail pipe?

I apologize, I would look this up in my books, but I'm on the road for a couple of weeks and would like to order the parts before I get home so they're waiting for me.
I want to use my time as efficiently as possible, I will only have some weekends at home for a while.

 

You have a 73 so your not gonna have to worry about a cat. If it were me I'd find a muffler shop and let build me one up like I wanted it. You could probably get it done on a Saturday morning. Thats gonna be your easiest route. Or you can go to the closest FLAPS and order a system and spend your weekend wrestling with it putting it on. In my experience what difference in cost is worth it most the time.

 

If you have a factory service manual it should show a complete exhaust system for the 6cyl from manifold to tail pipe. My 1974 FSM breaks it down just no part # on it

I don't know about the manifold to muffler pipe, may have to get a muffler shop to make it if you need it.

The manifold to muffler pipe is a Walker # 44565. This is for a 258, but I'll say it's the same for the 232.

If you have a real tubing header and not the original cast iron exhaust manifold, the Walker parts won't fit. A muffler shop would be your best route if you have a header - they will make the parts to fit.

I agree with the less headache theory on this.
I was thinking (or maybe not ) that I could just order a bolt on kit.

Walker makes the replacement parts.

 

Aren't they the same?

Walker makes DynoMax.

Do you think the Walker types are better quality than DynoMax?

Just trying to figure out if you are going restoration or performance.

Performance I would have a custom system built by a reputable exhaust shop.

Restoration I would order the Walker parts and bolt on!

 

I'm a fan of bolt on if it works.

I went ahead and purchased the Walker parts from RockAuto.com

I already have the exhaust manifold on the 232 and it appears to be in good shape.

I ordered everything else, ran me just under $180 w/ shipping.

I installed the exhaust from RockAuto.com this past weekend.
Bolted right up, fit good, no issues.

The clamps are not a typo, you need them all.
Also, RockAuto does not sell the exhaust manifold connector for the first pipe, just the gasket. So you can re-use the one you have if its in good condition, mine was, or you will have to find one somewhere else.
Beware of that.
Other than that it fit great.

 

Great! Just a couple of suggestions that may help you:
- if you used the composition exhaust gasket (the donut), it won't last. Felpro sells a steel donut that does. Jeep started supplying a steel ring to replace the composition one around that time, and in the next generation of manifolds cast-in the pipe's mating surface.
- your exhaust system will stay together longer if you use double clamps and hangers. Put two clamps at every joint and turn one 90 degrees to the other. Use two hangers where you can, especially where the tailpipe comes out - that one gets broken pretty easily. You can also add some extra weld around the stubs where they go into your muffler - with enough banging, the stubs can break loose.
