i picked up a 71 with a 225 v6 this morning. i just put new plugs in wired up the ignition and got a gascan to the carb. i can get it to stay running, before it would backfire loud with flames out the top the carb and then stop. i adjusted the fuel mixture and cleaned the carb. now it just stops after 2-4 seconds, even if i try to rev it higher when i feel it dying but it still shuts off.

i have cap, rotor, and new wires on order.

im prettymuch clueless when it comes to engines, so i wouldint be supprised if its somthing really simple.

guessing fuel problem, no fuel to carb
be careful with that gas can around the carb
put the air cleaner back on before cranking
    be safe

Jumped time? The V6 has a nylon timing gear that is well know to shed teeth.

Backfiring through the carburetor (at least repeatedly) is usually because of an out of time engine.....and could be a jumped timing chain causing it as Tim said. A cylinder fires while the intake valve is open igniting the fuel mixture in the intake...and it blows back through the carb.

nylon gear, before never heard that, but, i would check the timing on the dist. probably to advanced. try and retard it a little before it dies and it will probly smooth out.

    Never heard that?

Unless it's been replaced with steel it was stock. Hang around the forum for a few more posts or do a search. A few of us have fallen victim to the nylon timing gears.

Not surprising that they've been replaced. I'm sure you can guess why.

Used to see nylon timing gears now and then...pretty crappy but several companies used them at one time or another. Chain can still wear out and jump time with steel gears...gears aren't as likely to wear out though.

Aluminum cam gears with nylon teeth came stock from every factory in virtually every engine made up through the early 90's (I don't keep up on the newer engines). They are quieter than steel, a big selling point for new cars.
