Custom made clutch linkages

Here is an example of how not to make one. My linkage was fabbed / installed by a previous owner. I will be re-doing it in the near future.



The exhaust (also installed by a previous owner) has been changed to fenderwell exit headers since this pic was made.

 

1972 CJ'c have a cable clutch that works pretty nice. If you could get lucky and find a complete one to swap in you would be golden, but they only used that for one year from what i have seen. My Jeep has it and I have had no problems with it.

 

I would leave the exhaust as a skid plate to protect the linkage

 

Actually the the 1971 model that is shown was a cable operated setup, but someone chose to remove it. The bracket he has the spring attached to is suppose to have the cable pass thru it and the hole in the clutch arm where the steel arm is connected is for the clevis on the end of the cable to attach to. The torque tube added at the back of the set up isn't even suppost to be there.
The 70 and 71 models were cable operated if they were v6's.

 

I will snap a few pics for you tonight after work, I need to take some of my new front bumper that I built Saturday anyway to post up. I would have taken some of the bumper earlier but I had a few too many and temporarily lost my jeep for a day.

 

I heard the cable setup didn't work to good-that's why they switched to linkage after only 1 year.

I went with hydraulic on mine-it works great.

 

Mines not been replaced in at least 15 years as thats how long I've had the Jeep. To be perfectly honest though mine looks to be the original and the engine had 166k on it when I rebuilt it.

 

The type of linkage that Toolmaker has is sold by Turner Jeep Parts. I bought it and liked it for street driving but offroad it was terrible. I caught it on a rock ledge and blew up my TO bearing deep in the woods at Tellico. (Much thanks to Brad and Harry for towing me back to camp )

I have since fabbed my own chain type linkage based on the one AA sells.

 

Don't suppose that would work on the linkage in the '60. That would take care of the rod rubbing problem.R)

What kinda chain and sprocket did you use?

 

Chain and sprocket both came from Tractor Supply. A little 3/16" plate and that was it.

 

Well for what it is worth, I have been driving Jeeps since 1969 and the best set up has been the hydraulic clutch set-up. It has been the least problematic for me.

 

I vote for hydraulic too. Doesn't matter how twisty you get, it still works. The AA chain worked well in my Junk, but then I went to swinging pedals and there was no way I was going to use a cable.

 

Has anybody done hydraulic with floor pedal??

 

thats weird my 71 has the exact same setup, even the back torque tube is exactly the same. I have all the parts to convert my jeep back to cable but im not sure if it will work due to the muncie 4 speed swaped into my jeep. anyone have pics of how the cable linkage looks all hooked up?
