I just purchased a 65 CJ and was going to adj. front drum brakes. (pulls to the left when applying brakes). The p/o had installed new 11" drums and new bearings. I noticed when I was going to take off the drvs. drum that it was loose and could move it from side to side. Do you think that he just didn't have the spindle nut torqued correctly. what is the correct method to tighten this bolt and torque specs?

I tighten down the nut hard tell it starts to bind up and then back it off a little (Like a 1/4 turn.) tell it spins nicely. Then I put the washer on and tighten the other nut. Invest in the socket, its well worth it. I don't know the exact torque some one elts here will. Well your at it buy new seals and repack or replace your bearings.

The Jeep USM says tighten inner nut until slight binding, then back off 1/6th turn, put on washer and outer nut and tighten. Haynes manual says tighten inner to 50 ft-lbs while turning, or until slight binding, then add washer and tighten outer nut to 50 ft-lb as well. I think this leaves it a little loose, so I nudge it a bit tighter, but not much.
