Brake lights on

Walked into the garage last night to find the brake lights were light on my CJ-5. Reached in and grabbed the clutch pedal by mistake and they went out. The jeep has not been touched by anybody for more than two weeks. The light lenses were very hot so they where on for a while. Anybody ever seen this or have any guesses why this happened? I unhooked the battery for now. FYI, I put in a new wire harness from EZ Wire this winter.

Check brake fluid level - I've had it where the fluid leaked out and let the pedal down far enough to turn on the lights.

I had the same problem. Turned out the brake switch was bad. I have heard they can get hot enough to melt the plastic on the switch.

Thanks for the ideas. I hooked the battery back up at lunch and they didn't come on but they were back on when I got home from work. I'll check the fluid and look over the switch this weekend. I was thinking that maybe it was moisture because the garage is pretty damp right now, but not really sure. Unhooked the battery again just in case.

I had the same problem and replaced the sensor and the problem was still there. I ended up rebuilding the master cylinder and that ended up fixing the brake light issue.
