6v starter issues...

evanjm Yeah, it's got an F-head.

My '57 CJ5 has its original starter and it seems like it's on it's way out. It will start up fine if the jeep is cold. But after it runs for a while and turns off, when I go to turn the jeep back on it will crank over once when I hold down the floor button, but it's real slow and then won't crank over anymore.

I'm thinking the bushing and/or brushes are warn on the starter. What's everyone's opinion on that, sound about right?

That leads me to wondering, where do I go about getting the brushes and bushing for the starter? And how hard is it to replace these?

    Thanks in advance,
    Evan

If the bushings were worn it would be making grindy noises. Could be dirty brushes or commutator. May be a bad starter switch or even loose connections. Any automotive electrical shop should be able to rebuild it without problems.

Thanks Howard, you've once again saved the day. I have a replacement starter switch already, I'll try swapping that in tomorrow and see if that helps any.

    Thanks again,
