jeep rack and pinion steering???

Hi all, have a basket case 1969 cj-5. I got it as a parts vehicle. While looking at it the steering box looks to be a saginaw of some kind. The pitman arm comes down to a cross bar attached to the frame brace/radiator support on pivots with short arms going down to each knuckle. Is this normal as I have never seen one like this on a jeep. Any ideas. O yah- this jeep body and frame need a new home asap.

If it's what I think you're talking about, it's not rack and pinion. No CJs ever had a rack and pinion steering setup.

The steering setup you referred to is called Ross Cam and Lever. It's the original jeep steering setup, dating back to the early '40s.

As to the jeep body and frame, what condition are they in? My '57 is in desperate need of a new body haha.

Sounds like Ross steering. Both of your other Jeeps must have been converted to Saginaw before you got them.
