    Hi All,
Just got a bunch of parts for my 74 CJ5. I got the plate and title for it on Wednesday so I am anxious to get it inspected. I have new side marker lights, new backup lights and new tailights. So far I have the headligths working as well as the taillight at least lighting up. My questions are

    1) How does the backup light work? The connection for the switch is on the gearbox right? So when it is shifted into reverse it should light those up?

    2) I have front marker lights but they don't work as signals. They do seem to get brighter but do not go on and off. Is this just a relay issue?

3)Hazard switch does nothing so I need to check the wiring on that.

    4) I have 2 wires coming out of the harness for the horn. The FSM shows a 2 prong connecter( the L shaped one) but my new horn has 2 tabs and they are not in an L shape. It also came with a ground. Any advice on hooking the horn up?

I suck at wiring so I may ask some dumb questions.

    Thanks
    Mike

    I'll try - just wired my 74.

#1- Wired to gearbox accessible from shifter plate on floor. Runs out and into rear wiring harness at firewall and back to lights. Only on in reverse with key on. How it works - maybe a small troll or gremlin inside case?:?

#2- Do you mean fender marker lights or round ones on the grille? Fenders do not blink.

#3- May just need a new switch. Tied into turn signal switch wiring. Are your turn signals working? I scraped all of mine - hazard, turn signal and added a new column mount turn signal- simple hookup with hazard built in - $30 EBAY

#4- Mine is a two prong input, the prongs are at a 90 to each other. Mine makes a T not a L. Picks up constant 12v power off of starter relay.

Timgr posted this link to www.c104.net goto tech manual - and grab wiring.(super slow) It's for a 72 commando but it was dead on accurate for my wiring.

I'll see my buddy monday and see if he has an air cleaner assembly. He has a lot of V8s but maybe with my I6 bottom plate and a V8 assembly you could make it work.

Re the backup light, in the shifter top are rails that slide back and forth depending on where you push the shifter. The shift forks are hanging from the rails. When you shift into reverse, the right rail moves back (opposite from teh shifter) and pushes on the ball on the bottom of the switch. This connects the terminal on the switch to the body of the switch, and grounds the terminal, completing the backup light circuit.

    Thanks GarbageMan,
I got further tonite using the FSM. I have all the lights with power now except the backup lights. Still no go on them. I bought new flashers today and found some blown fuses. I still have a coupld of unknown wires under the dash but I am making progress. Once I find where all the wires go I'll start going over grounds and connections and replace the fuses and see where I am then. I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Is this the type of switch you are talking about?

    Timgr,
How do you store all this stuff in your head? Thanks!

    they don't? :?

they blink on my '75. i always assumed this was how they worked from the factory. they don't get brighter, they just alternate between "on" and "off", but blink.

Mine is a little different - EBAY. But that will work.

You can wire in the side markers to the flasher circuit for turn signals. But not from factory as far as I know

    Some progress and more questions.

    1) I now have all marker lights, headlights (hi and low) and brake lights if the main lights are off. I drove the jeep around for about 30 mins in the neighborhood tonite and when I got back I noticed the all the lights were flashing like the emergency was on. I checked and it was but it had been on the whole time. It just all of a sudden started working. Is this a gorund or a flasher? I replaced the flashers.

    2) Still no backup lights. Checked wires and grounds. Could it be the switch on the gearbox?

3)No signals whatsoever. I think i have fixed all the gounds and checked all the wires and replaced the flashers and checked the connections from the signal switch. Any other ideas?
