I took the Jeep up a steep short hill yesterday (it's first real test of 4wd drive ability) and it did very well.
However I noticed some oil seeping through the floor at the joint between the tranny covers. Almost panicked at first but figured it out pretty quick and confirmed it was the air cleaner when I popped the hood.

I spent 2 hours scrubbing 25 years of gooed on grime off that thing last weekend, not to mention the manifold and the bellhousing were all clean.
I filled the air filter to the fill line. Is it going to do this everytime I go up (or down) something steep?

I bought a paper element filter @ Autozone but the 2 5/8 adapter didn't seat right so I took it back. That's when I decided to clean up the oil bath filter and keep it on there.
I don't want to have to clean up a mess everytime I go off-road........
I would like to find something I can clean like a K&N filter.

As an added question...........I included a couple of pictures.
What is the down facing tube on the side of the air cleaner for?
Which way should it orientate? I assumed that the Dauntless sticker should face the front.
    Never ends.

It is likely the oil bath air cleaner will leak when 4weeling at extream angles.
it you are worred about that look into a after market air cleaner or the other opiton is to go to the junk yard and look for one their.

I checked mine one day on the F134. I know its a different cleaner, but after cleaning out the bottom part, I found some pinholes in the bottom and filled them up with JB Weld. works so far

I do not know what the function of the tube in the front is for but the one going to the valve cover looks correct.the oil bath is a extreme duty type filter and would not think it should spill oil at anytime.i bought a used oil bath and after cleaning it found that the bottom (underside)was rusted with pin holes.i soldered up all the holes.the inside were the oil goes was also rusted out.JB weld to the rescue.have not used it on the jeep, but i filled wih oil and no leaks.I am positive that you can find a aftermarket filter housing and a K/N to fit it. good luck, mike s.

I would like to keep the oil bath filter........I guess it will leak from time to time then. If it happens too much I will change it.
I would wonder if I didn't fill it all the way to the fill line if it would still be efficient?
There are no holes in it, the oil ran over the top lip.
    Thanks for the replies.
