I got my Jeep back from getting the trans, t-case and clutch all replaced or rebuilt.
It was a nice warm day so I drove it to work. I actually took the freeway part of the way........might not do that again, 60 mph in the slow lane just wasn't fast enough for the people around here!

Anyway it ran great. I drove it around the jobsite (I am a superintendent building condos) and it just died on me. Started back up but did it again when I left to go home. It was a little like what it did before and I drilled a hole in the gas cap and that seemed to remedy the problem. I removed the gas cap and drove home and it sputtered once but didn't die.

One thing in the chain of command of the fuel sysem I haven't replaced is the fuel pump. Could the fuel pump be failing and causing the problem. I am going to replace it anyways but was hoping that this would fix it.

    Thanks.

BTW does anyone have a part # for a vented gas cap for a '65?

ck to see if the carb has gas. after it dies pull the air cleaner top with out the motor running or cranking move the throtle to see if the accelator pump is squrting gas.

if no then it could be fuel pump fuel filter or the float or valve.

Do you have the return line to the tank hooked up? I had the same problem and had the return line capped off. Hooked the line back up and had no problems after that. I guess they are famous for vapor locking.

Sounds like lack of fuel. In-line fuel filter could be plugged. Or the fuel filter at the carb inlet. Or the fuel pickup inside the tank. I think these are more likely than the pump. I guess you could do the fuel pump flow test and see how fast it fills up a jar. Could also be crud inside the carb plugging up the needle valve or even the main jets? I'm just throwing out ideas.

    Thanks for the replies.
    The carb is fresh rebuild.
The fuel filter does have a little crud in the bottom. I will replace it.
Tank is new........shouldn't be much in there to clog it.
I will probably do the fuel pump just cuz I think it's gotta be due anyways. Isn't ther a diaphram in there?
I checked Napa online and the only thing they had listed was an electronic pump.
What vehicle can I use to find the pump for my '66 Dauntless?

Am I OK with a high volume pump....is it possible to pump too much fuel into the carb or is it regulated by the accelerator pump or something else in the carb?

    Thanks for the info!

Did you get it figured out? I'm not sure what you mean by "high volume pump". Maybe you were thinking the buick 350 pump would move more fuel but I suspect it would be exactly the same pump. I got mine from NAPA - they were able to look up 70 CJ5 V6. A pump # is shown in one of the posts above.
The rest of your question doesn't make much sense. But no, you shouldn't have to worry as there should be a return line outlet on the bottom of the pump that sends the extra fuel back to the tank. And, the accelerator pump does not regulate fuel flow from the pump to the carb - that would be the needle valve which is controlled by the float, kinda like in a toilet.
Let us know how it's going.

Yeah, I know that now.........not sure that I'd do it again. I was actually probably going 65 much of the time, still not fast enough. It is the new section of the 210 between Upland and the 15. It's a fast runner!
I wouldn't have felt so nervous but I'm still not use to no doors and no top with a lap belt.........kinda like being on a bike without the power to get out of the way. I've gotten spoiled I guess.

As far as fuel pump go, I went to Napa and ended up with the m4512.
It looks right except the outlet on the one I have not faces straight down and the new one comes out at a 90'. I will either have to fab a new fuel line or 90 the outlet back down.
Thanks for all of the replies.
