    Hey gang...

I'm new to the Jeep world, and today Beulah started steamin' and havin' trouble running. Did I blow a head gasket? Any advice would be helpful, as I'm about to pull the head to check. I know it's not hard and probably will take me an hour to an hour and a half to find out. If it turns out it's not the head gasket, is the engine shot?

I would start by checking coolant lines for leaks or loose connections. It could be the head gasket but might not be. Check the coolant level in the radiator. If it is low you are leaking somewhere. You might also see some antifreeze in the oil if the head gasket is blown. I'm no geneous but that is where I would start.

there's some dampness under the water pump. I'm thinkin' it's the water pump gasket... I'll stuff a paper towel under there and check it when I'm back from pickin' up my new 4 speed....

Most common water pump leak is when the packing goes on the pump shaft. Years ago you could get a kit and rebuild it for a few bucks, but nowadays the water pump is pretty much disposable. If this is it, it will steadily get worse until it blows out altogether and strands you somewhere.

Yea, if its coming out of the gasket...good, if its coming out of the seep hole...bad. Not that bad though, water pumps are cheap and I always get the ones guarenteed for life.

if it is having trouble running sounds like a blown head gasket, warped or craked head,or even worse busted cylinder,is it steaming out the exaust? if it is struggling to run or has a bad miss this would be caused by coolant entering the cylinder and fouling the sparkplug

just running poorly at idle, but it's always done that. I'm gonna swap out the water pump w/ a new one and a fresh gasket. the test I ran yesterday (stuffed a paper towel under the pump) turned up positive. if it still steams after, then I know its the head gasket...

Found the leak. It's def. the waterpump. I stuffed a paper towel under it and it was damp after running for 10-15 min. Oh well, it'll get taken care of... eventually
