I just got a 76 CJ5 with an AMC 304 in it. It has a FORD 4 speed (4th being overdrive) trans. The trans is a top loader that I was told came in 1980-1989 ford light trucks. the top plate shifter houseing is broken and must be replaced. I called ford and they cant get that part. The part # is 7222-a in the 80-89 ford light truck catalog(or so I was told) but I cant seem to run one down. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME LOCATE ONE PLEASE!!

Call R&P 4 Wheel drive parts. They have converted the RTS to Jeep transfer cases and may be able to locate the parts you need. 503-557-8911. Ask for Paul. Nickmil

Uhh, by the way, could you please fill out your profile? It's helpful for us to help you. Thanks. Nickmil

A 4 speed with 4th being overdrive. Interesting. ... I've never heard of this.
And it fit's in a CJ5. I'd like to learn more about this tranny. Pictures and numbers or a link would be great!!.

    http://www.r-p4wd.com/site/

It's not listed on the site but you can contact them and it shows a little of what they do. They are in process of updating everything right now. There are several Toploader Ford Overdrive transmissions. The RUG, RTS, SROD. The RTS uses a true shifter top like a T-90, T-18, etc. These can be hard to come by. Looking for one myself right now. The RUG and SROD uses external linkage when adapted to a Jeep transfer case which means cutting the tub. The first gear on most of these is around a 3.5 or 3.2-1, I don't remember exactly off the top of my head. 3rd gear is slightly under 1-1 and 4th is od IIRC. R&P was building the output shaft and steel adapters for these. You'd have to talk to Paul to find out if they still are. Nickmil
