Wait till you get down here to Arizona and lets see if you still think the cooling system is up to it. Although Prescott is cooler, being above 5000 feet, and gets snowed on a lot.R) :coffee:

I'm in complete agreement with madizell on the thermostat, just pull the rad cap & watch for 10 minutes, you can see the change in flow as the thermostat cycles. The "pill" is actually some sort of wax formulated to melt at a specific temp encased in an itty bitty hydraulic cylinder. Above that temp it melts it expands, when below it solidifies & contracts.

re. jeeps overheating I'd suggest moving up to a rad from a M38A1, they're three core vs. the civvy 2 core version. They arn't mentioned in the parts manual but Tonk had one on him & it appears to have been original equipment.

Sometimes, especially in 30-40year old jeeps, the cooling hoses get routed to a different location than stock, now I know most jeeps have all the stock parts on them, yea right, anyway if the heater hose gets routed from the water pump and returned to a fitting on the radiator, then the thermostat will be bypassed by the heater core causing a cold engine. That is what I meant by hose routing.

sounds like you need a higher thermostat to me. would go for at least 195*, 200* would be better.

Yea, I see what your saying GPin. Just out of curiosity, anyone have a stock 258 with a stock speedo/fuel/temp assembly? How far does everyones needle move on the temp? Mine moves only maybe 1/5th.

Wax? I thought it was a bimetal spring? I know one thing that would help and also give more power is a fan clutch. My little F head's fan run's constantly with engine speed and I know I'm loosin alot of power with that fan always pushin air:rofl: I may do some modifications come spring.

Clutch fans work off temperature not speed. Look in the front and you will find a thermostatic spring.

i'm with mcruff on this one. i am running a 185* thermostat. it's new even in the summer (90*+) it stays at the cool end of the green. it did this even before i replaced the rad core from 2 to 3.

ever look at the front of diesel semi's in the winter?
