Can anyone please help me troubleshoot. My jeep cranks up, runs ok, but once I get it started there is no use for the ignition key anymore. The key doesn't turn it off. Its a hunting jeep, but still I want to turn it on with the key and turn it off with the key. Thoughts?? I am sure there are plenty of you who have the answer.

Sounds like you have a bad ignition switch, the electrical part under the dash.If not you have some bad wires elsewere.Hope this helps!

Sounds to me like your coil has a 12 volt constant wire instead of the switched 12 volt source. This happened to me when I put my HEI on. Sucks when you have to open the hood and sufficate your Jeep.

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

This recently happened to me. Once the engine started, the switched alternator line was backfeeding through IGN side of the ignition swith then back down to the coil. It needed a diode so it could only run one way.

If you have a ford style starter solnoid on the fire wall (some jeeps do I dont know wich ones) they can go bad I think it is labled the "t" terminil wich supplys 12 v when starting. if that goes bad once you start it it wont shut off. I dont know if any gm style starters have it the might. Just a idea some thing else to check. I would think some one here would know for sure.
Let us know what you figure out.

I find pointing my .44 at it sometimes works.R)

Does sound like a continuous hot to the coil, though. Like someone tried to hotwire it.:coffee:

Thanks for the ideas. Before I posted this, I first tried a new igition switch thinking maybe that was it. Nope. Then tried a new started solinoid and that didn't do it. So much car inexperience turned me to you guys, who have bailed me out before. I did pull a rewire before this started, but it worked fine after the rewire until (of course) I pulled it 5 hours from here to the garage at the ranch house. So as much ammo as anyone can come up with will help me for next time I load up for my trip over to the ranch.

CJ4U Aint broke, ur not trying

Check it for a live ground out wire. (I'm a test light junky). The coil shouldn't have power with the vehicle off. A day goofing around with a test light and Frondy in every position imaginable should bring up the problem.;)

I'm betting alternator is jumpered to the coil.

    Thought occured.:?
Check the ground strap between the engine block and the frame. Check the ground strap between the block and the battery, or battery and frame. look for corrosion build-up. :coffee:

Is there a light bulb between your ignition switch and your #1 terminal on the alternator? Exluding this would definitly do it.

Also could be jumpered from starter solenoid to coil.

I know it has been a long time since I posted this, but I actually am going to get back to the ranch to do some work on the jeep next weekend. I am trying to get a few different ideas, so if one thing doesnt work then I can try something else on the same trip. I have a few pictures and thought someone might see something that was obvious. Working on any car or jeep is a new thing to me.

I would look at the solnoid on the fender. the "S" termnal should have power in the crank postion. the other small tremnal I think it is labled "T" should also have power only when cranking that wire should go to the coil to provide 12volts when cranking. I had a mustang thet the solnoid went bad and had power to that termanl all the time and the car wouldn't shut off. other then that check the ign switch.
good luck I hope that helps.

if what has been mentioned earlier in this thred doesnt solve it,the only other thing i can think of is back feed, something that is on with a bad ground will do this,my ole pickup did it,confused the hell out of me would not shut off in reverse,"4 speed" come to find out in my situation that the ground to the back up lights was bad, fixed ground problem went away, check every thing said it will turn up,and most likley a easy fix, just hard to find

I think I would disconnect the wire from the "I" terminal on the solenoid to the coil. That wire is there to provide a full 12v to the coil when starting helps you have a hotter spark. It should only be hot when the starter is engaged. With that wire removed you eliminate the possibility of the solenoid being the problem. If the problem still is there check for 12v on the coil with the key off there should be nothing present. If there is trace that wire back andb you should find the problem. :)

Thanks guys. I will see what I can get done next weekend when I get to see him. I also have to replace a fuel pump, so hopefully we will be up and running by the end of the weekend.

Where does the wire marked 'Batt' lead back to?:?
And what are the two on the other terminal? Is one a tach lead?:?
'Batt' lead should go to the switched side of the ignition switch.
If the purple wire is going from the neg side of coil to the solenoid, that very well could be your problem. Try once with that one disconnected and taped to prevent sparks.

My starter solenoid only has the wire connected on the left small terminal and nothing on the right one. But it is an F-134.
Wiring diagram from the CJ book (Haynes 50020) shows only the one lead on the solenoid also. For the '74, and also the '76-'77.
