Allright, having more fun with this '80CJ5 then a barrel of monkeys.

Here is a question that I hope someone may have an answer for.

Currently I am having the steering column replaced at the local "offroad" shop" with a heavy duty one. Good price, good people. Want to make the vehicle safe for mainly on road driving. I asked him to give me pointers on the set-up as it is (what is the carburetor, other stuff to know, etc.)

The engine ia a 4 cylinder GM 2.5 litre engine (the PO is looking for paperwork on when he replaced it...his guess is less than 17K miles on the rebuild). The air filter on top looks like the original can, but without any dampening or oil vapor hook-ups (tubes still in place but they really aren't routed anywhere). Basically the can houses the air filter, only.

Another friend(old airforce mechanic) indicated we'd get better performance by either:

    1) Stacking paper filters and using longer lid screws to tie everything down. (allowing for more air)

    2) Drilling or cutting holes all around the housing "tin" and removing the elongated neck as an initial upgrade pending replacing the air filter unit with a more open one. (I am assuming similar to a Holley "Bug Spray" (?) from my old Volks Wagon days thirty + years ago).

He claims that the additional air flow will help both performance and efficiency (read, mileage).

Can this be true...is there any vacuum issues or other reasons to have a more restricted air intake? What would you all recommend. It will be some time before I might want a K&N.

As I noted, the previous owner had removed all vacuum and other lines from the cannister except for the oil vapor hose, (there is no "flap" in the "neck"), so that the air intake was unrestricted but coming solely from the elongated neck of the can housing the air filter.

Thanks for all you input...your answers to these things can really make a difference.

I don't have much in the way to answer your questions but....

What are you doing with your old steering column?

I ask because I am looking for one....:)

This is the lower portion of the steering column (begins with the u-joint and ends a where it mates with the steering box). The u-joint is worn and loose...if you want it, and, I get it back from the shop, you can have it. The new one is a much stronger design with a u-joint at each end (instead of the funky looking joint thingy).

Let me know (pm me). I can arrange getting it to you. Its coming off an original power steering (and tilt wheel) column from the '80.
