I am new to the CJ world and I just purchased a 67 CJ5. The current gas tank has a hole in it so I went to purchase a new one online and from the descriptions I see, it looks like the 67 should have the gas tank located under the seat. My jeep has it located in the rear. Where was the proper location on the 67 CJ?

    Tks in advance

Under the seat. If it's in the back, it's been converted.

is there still a side panel with a hole for the gas tank filler in the sheetmetal just under where the door opening curves to go to the back of the tub?

Moving the gas tank seems to be a pretty popular conversion. My bet is your gas tank is from a later jeep though. If you have the tank down, why not post a few pictures? Maybe one of the gurus here can tell you what your tank is so you can replace it.

Fuel tank was located under the drivers seat with the fuel-fill on the side just behind the drivers door opening. This was moved to the rear of the Jeep somehwere in 1970 to comply with federal regulations that fuel tanks could not be in the passenger compartment.

Tks for the responses - I have the body in storage so I went and took a look at it and there is a plate welded over the side gas fill location. It has definately been converted.

I'll post a picture of the gas tank once I drop it to see if someone can help me identify it.

Tks for the help - this forum is great.
