I have a 51 M38, new speedo, new speedo cable, but it still doesn't read.... is there a gear inside the transfer that can be replaced relativly easy? If so where can I get the part? I know speed isn't that important to most of you out there but I live on a military base and they will pull you over for doing 2 miles over. Any help is appreciated..

remove the cable from the threaded adapter at the transfer case.
Unscrew/remove the threaded apapter; once removed, the driven gear will pull out of the housing for inspection.
Using a mirror and flashlight, you might be able to take a peek at the drive gear inside the transfer case.
To get at it (if necc) you would have to remove the rear cap from the transfer case and parking brake assy.
Look for worn/broken teeth; replace as necc.
You might also try spinning the cable inside the cable housing and watch to see if the needle moves at all in the speedometer.

Thanks Jim, I'll give it a try. If parts are needed where do you suggest I get them from?

:iagree: those guys know more about military vehicles than anywhere else on the net.

Not to detract from the folks here.

if your Jeep is still stock, the rear housing for the transfer case and the speedo driven gear are unique to your model.
    FYI
let us know what the problem is/was
