Finally got tired of smelling like gasoline after every time I drive my 66 CJ5 :v6:, so I just purchased and recieved a replacement underseat poly gas tank and new sending unit.

My old tank had the feed line coming out of the bottom and the return line back in the top (near the door). The new sending unit has both the feed and the return line in it (coming into the top of the tank.

:? Should I reroute my feed line or alter the poly tank (make a hole in the bottom to thread in the feed line) to keep the feed line in the same place? Does it matter, or can I just decide which would be easier and go for it?

Anyone run into this before? a little help...

    Thanks.

Run new line, don't alter the tank.

MOP's done this in his Jeep, but I can't recall exactly how.

I ran mine with steel tubing towards the passenger seat (contouring the tank down), through the floor (drilled a 1/2" hole and inserted a rubber grommet), then curved into the frame rail.

My return line was already removed so I just blocked it off and run without it.

If I had my digicam at home I would take a pic, maybe tomorrow?

Feed line (pickup) is in the sending unit plate. For the return, I drilled and tapped (NPT) another hole in the sending unit plate. FWIW, I also installed a fitting in the filler neck for a vent.

According to the FSM all V-6's had the 2 lines going to the sender as original. Someone may have thrown an early model F-4 tank in at one time and added the return line.

Maybe what the FSM says, but my '67 had the return right on the top of the tank itself...

My vote is to extend the lines and not to modify the tank. this would be the best bet to not have any leaks.

I have to laugh, my new poly tank showed up last friday, and I am trying to decide how to run the new fuel lines. I like the sugestions so far, thanks for asking the question Keith.

Well, it took awhile but I finally found the time to install my new tank. Everything went in great and I was able to add some rubber fuel line from the top of the sending unit to the fuel pump with little problem.

However, I discovered that what I thought was my return line is more like a vent. It runs from the top of the sending unit to a metal fuel line that ends abruptly inside the frame about even with the rear tires. Is this common? Everything runs well, just thought I would have an actual return line from somewhere around the carb.

But now the fuel gauge does not register. :? Haven't troubleshot it yet...anyone else have this issue with a replacement fuel tank/sending unit?

    TTFN.

Try grounding your sending unit. Use a jumper (wire with alligator clips) one clip on the metal portion of the sending unit, the other clip to the frame or other good ground. See if your gage works after that.
