You all are some of the most helpful and knowledgable people around, especially to a totally neophyte as myself. Here is a question I have regarding a second transmission given me...

I have a (new to me) 1980 CJ5, I am assuming that the installed transmission is an SR4 since the shifter attachment on top of the case resembles the parts diagram(s)I have looked at.

However, the P/O gave me a second transmission. Slightly different look. It seems to be a four speed and have the reverse located to the right (passenger side)and rear, assuming that the front of the case has the extended spline and the recessed spline hooks up to the transfer case (and is located under the shifter assembly).

I have gleaned some of the parts numbers off the case...I believe in the follwoing order>

    BorgWarner

Shifter assembly (to the rear of the case) 13-51-066
    Main case 13-51-025
Cover (on top of the case) 13-51-097

There is a corroded tag on one of the shifter case/main case bolts. The tag is still whole, however, it is covered in baked on/dried on crude and I didn't have a whire brush small enough to scrape it clean. I will try and decipher as many of the numbers as I can this weekend.

The uninstalled transmission seems to shift fairly tightly (no slop in the linkage).

Can anyone help identify what this is?

Would it be a good to refurbish and possibly use as a replacement for the SR4?

Would it fit the DANA 300 transfer case without trouble.

Finally, could I change these two transmissions (mystery and SR4)
using one while the other is being worked on?

    Thanks once again.

Sounds to me like a T-18. Not sure if it is a close ratio( probably is) or wide ratio but still a great tranny in my book.
Post some pics and that will make it easier to identify.

Just talked to "Ron" at Borg Warner. He says the 13-51 series is a T-4 transmission. Based on the number series, would that be correct? How would that stack up against a T-18?

This thing has four speeds forward, and the reverse appears to be to the right and back. I have no idea about ratios.

Oh, about pictures, um, still learning on that one. I will talk to my wife...she is the internet and computer wizard in my house

    Again, thanks.

T-4 is the later equivalent of the SR-4 in the Jeep line. Light duty transmission, like the SR-4.

13-51 is indeed a T4. As Tim said, light duty.
It should bolt right up to a D300.
I believe they use the same bellhousing, there may be one bolt hole different, but the bell can accomodate that. Should be interchangeable otherwise.

Consider trading/selling both for a good T176, a decent medium duty tranny. It will also bolt to your D300, but needs a different bell IIRC.

    HTH, good luck

    T-18 would be 13-01.

Would an AX-15 bolt inbetween the 258cid and D300 without modification? Been poking around, and haven't quite found a definite "yes" or "no" yet.

Novak's site says yes, but they recommend their clocking ring. Thus they will bolt together, but the rotation won't be optimal. An AX-15 would be long for a CJ-5 I'd think.

IIRC the AX-15 is a bit longer than the T-4/SR-4 combo. T-5 and T-4 are about the same length. I'd have to double check on that for sure. Nickmil
