Hey everyone, new to the site as of a few days ago. I've been reading your threads like crazy. Great stuff, learning lots. My wife bought me a 67 Jeepster for Christmas and have been re-wiring like crazy. I'm about to pull off the fuel tank to re wire the sending unit. My question is does anyone know the wire color(s) that go to the unit, I can see that mine are missing completely. I've found a random blue wire hanging from the rear fender well that looks like its linking up with the tail light wire bundle. Also is there anyway to test if the fuel gauge itself is still working? Thanks

Mine is a blue wire and it just connects via a screw on the top of the sending unit.

Can't find my wiring diagram right now but that sounds right. If you have a test light, with the key in the run position check for current at that wire. The test light should flash or pulse. To check the sending unit use an ohm meter. Can't remember off the top of my head what the reading should be, I'd have to look it up. Make sure the gas tank has a good ground or two.
    Welcome to the board.

Found the readings for the sending unit--10ohms in the full position and 78ohms empty.

Thanks for your help, upon further investigation looks like my blue wire was just more proof that whoever owned this before has an insane stamp on the back of his hand that he can't wash off. It was wired directly into the tail lights. I'm almost to the point of spending the extra dough for a wiring harness. Anyhow, thanks again, oh and if anyone comes across a wiring diagram, I could really use it, the microscopic one in the Chilton I have doesn't seem to cut it. Here are a couple more pics

Just joined today. Nice Jeepster. You need to buy a Service Manual. They come up on E-Bay every now and again. Well worth the money. You may find one else where also.

This is my first reply on this site. Hope I'm doing it right.
I just checked my 71 Jeepster. I'm sure the wiring is all original. The wire to my fuel sending unit is white. The orange, blue, green and yellow are tail light, turn signal and back up lights. I hope this helps.
I love this site, it's been a big help to me. I check it daily.

White wire to terminal on sending unit, other wire ground. Blue wire should be rear lights (Back-up light, I think).
Merry Christmas:drool: !!! And welcome from SW Washington!

Thanks, I found the missing white wire stuffed up in the taillight. I tried to see if it would make my test light flash or pulse but no dice. power is getting to the fuel gauge via the green wire but there is no pulse going to the white wire. Does this mean the gauge itself is bad or do i have the wrong idea on how this system works??? Nice to meet you Lostdawg, I was stationed in Tacoma for five years that where I met my wife, she's from Gig Harbor.

I have a 1970 jeepster and my sending unit wire is white. I installed a new sending unit and when I turn the key both temp gauge and fuel gauge peg out. I checked the ohms and they read correctly 10 ohms full and 78 empty. Any ideas

Because they both peg out I'd suspect a problem with a ground, the instrument voltage regulator on the back of the cluster or possibly the printed circuit or the connector and or pins on the cluster.

Can you supply a pic of the back of the fuel and temp gauge assy with wires. After market and mods make it impossible to second guess what you may have.
