I figured that the original thread was getting a little long.
I drained the fluids in both. Had lots of metal in the t-case, though it seemed to mostly be pretty fine shavings. :(

They are in the picture of the paint roller tray. The color was a little wierd, almost like water in a lower unit of a boat but it wasn't water.

The tranny gear oil looked more normal, though there were some small chunks (see picture on white paper) they were thin metal about the size of a BB. These chunks were steel, not brass.

The metal shavings in the pan from the tranny looked to be brass as opposed to the steel from the t-case.

I am looking at the lower cover on the t-case and it would appear that I need to take off the cross member. So now I am at a crossroad. I know I got problems. I know I'm probably not going to do the labor myself, I don't have time or ambition and don't want to screw it up. I have a few bucks set aside to spend on this thing so I was ready for this sort of thing but it weill delay things like a top and shocks and lights, etc.

Is it possible to pull that cover without pulling the cross member?

    Someday I'll have me a functional Jeep!
So much for hunting season with her this year though.

You have a T-98 so that might change things, but I can pull mine with a T-90. If you can get at the bolts I don't know why you couldn't pull it.

The fine bronze shavings i wouldnt be as concered at, because it is probably normal wear from the thrust washers. The chunks i would be curious to was disintegrated. Hopefully nothing bad because t98 parts can be difficult to get, but just open it up and see what is wrong. The gearbox combo is much heavier than the t90/dana 18 combo so get a buddy and a floor jack to help. You will have to remove both at one time and there is a bolt that comes in from the front that holds the t98 to the dana 18, it is kind of hidden as is a PIA to get to, it will take some creative tool making to get at it. once you see it you will know what i mean.

Yeah, I'm not going to pull the stuff out myself. I know I can do it, It's been years but I have pulled a few trannies and done some clutches but I really dont want to put it back in (that's where I think I might have problems). It's a time issue as much as anything else. Real busy at work! Of course that means money ain't so tight so why not pay someone!

As far as the bottom pan on the t-case, it looks like 2 or 3 bolts are really buried by the cross member, I'll get under there and re-examine the angles and try to figure out how to get a wrench in there. I would like to see inside there before taking it to someone.
I had my finger in the drain hole and the gear I could feel felt good as I rotated it all the way around.

One more question.......am I mistaken in thinking that eht trans and t-case share gear oil? The pieces of metal seemed to be collected in some sludge at the bottom of the tranny, just inside the drain hole. Could they have migrated from the t-case?

Re: Trans/transfer case-part2 Carnage pics added....

Pulled the pan on the t-case. I was actually able to get a socket on all bolts but 1. It was an 1/8 turn at a time bolt, took about 10 minutes! The rest was easy.
Lotta chunks in the pan.....surprized more didn't come out when I drained the fluid.
I could only find 1 broken tooth on 1 gear.
I will attach a picture of it. With the amount of metal in the pan there must be more hidden carnage somewhere.

Yep. This looks familar - the intermediate shaft wore too much on mine and I had the broken tooth problem. You can order parts from Novak or Herm. You want to use the good quality intermediate shaft from Novak which you can get from Novak or Herm.

Looking at the picture things may have gotten pretty hot to get that blued hue - could be just the picture.

I think it's just the picture.
The broken tooth is on the gear at the top of the picture. It's hard to see in that picture.

I can't see where the rest of those chunks could have possibly come from.
I spun it all around a few times and examined every gear and only found that one chipped tooth.

Anyone (from so cal) know if Scotty's in Fontana does good gear work?
