So I got everything running good, insured, registered and cleaned up.
I was taking the Jeep on it's more or less maiden voyage out of the neighborhood to put some gas in it and noticed that once I got into 3rd or 4th and let off the gas or pushed in the clutch there seemed to be a rattling, knocking noise coming from the tranny (or transfer case).
I wasn't sure if it was normal.....or maybe normal for the age/use of the vehicle.

Anyway I decided to press on as I was almost there and all of a sudden it just kind of locked up:mad: . Hard to explain but I was able to start it and drive it out of traffic and around a corner to a side street. It didn't really make any noise just kind of felt like something was binding.

I thought maybe U-joint but they are intact.

I shifted the t-case to 4 high and it seemed fine so I started to head back home.

Started heading back home and the motor just died:?
I'm pretty sure that one thing had nothing to do with the other. I went to turn it over and the battery was pretty dead with enough juice for half a crank or so. I'm hoping connection or at worse generator?

So I called my wife and had her bring my truck, hooked her to the tow bar and put it in Neutral/neutral. It was making a noise like I was dragging a chain....?? I shifted the t-case to 2-high and it stopped.

Quite a set-back but not entirely unexpected.

I saw in another post the GL-5 gear oil could be bad? When I had the brakes done they changed the oil in the tranny and t-case. I'm not sure what they used.

I know that my t-case leaks (just put on new PTO cover gasket, only slightly slowed it down)I topped it off with 90 wt GL-5:(
And just read this while checking out the Novak site.....

"The T98 is a good transmission, but parts are rather elusive. Individuals hoping to mix and match different versions for conversion and adaptation purposes often find it to be a frustratingly long and expensive experience."

    What blew in there?

Your description makes me think you were driving in 4 wd on pavement. That will make things bind up just as you described.

Drain the oil out of the transfercase and the transmission both. Look to see if you find any metal coming out of either. Hard to tell, but sounds like maybe the tcase? Just a guess.

You can also pull the pto cover off the back of the tcase to look inside. May not see much if it is the gears for the front wheel drive portion but its a start. You can also pull the oil pan from the tcase. You can also pull the transmission gear shifter cover off and look down in there to see if any teeth are missing.
Sounds like you might have a chunck of metal bouncing around that gets lodged in the gears and then works its way loose...

good luck and let us know what you find.

    That sounds very doable.
I assume that a drop-off deal and not including in and out labor?

    2WD high, with hubs free.
Like I said shifting into 4WD high seemed to eliminate the problem. That was with the hubs unlocked also.

Is it possible you started out in 4 wd and actually shifted into 2 wd? Single lever or dual lever t-case?

    Single lever.
The shift pattern sticker is gone but............
I believe it is, starting at the firewall: 2wd high
    4wd high
    N
    4wd low

I need to tow it to the insurance agency so they can inspect it, and have to get it done this week.
I've got to figure out why it made noise towing in N on the t-case.........maybe I was in 4wd high? Only went about 100 yards.

Oh I charged the battery, checked the connections. At the starter the positive lead from the battery was a little bit loose...so maybe that was it.

Even if it was in 4wd high, with the hubs unlocked it shouldnt matter. The only way it would is if the gear ratios are different between the front and rear ends.

    Neptco,

Sorry to be so ignorant on this stuff but my knowledge is limited:oops:
What do you mean exactly? Do you mean when I shifted into 4wd high and it seemed to eliminate the problem?
I might go try it right now.......stand-by.
OK I went and drove it 100 yards up and back and it didn't seem to matter where the t-case was. It din't really do anything wrong though but I did hear some noises that I would be hard-pressed to ID.

Re: Transmission of transfer case broke

IF the hubs are unlocked there is no power being transfered to the front tires. It is sending power to the front axle though, and if the gear ratio was different than the rear axle (unlikely unless someone swapped an axle) then they would bind up. Also I "believe" the shift pattern is 4hi,2hi,N,4lo. But I cant remember exactly since all the D18s I've dealt with were twin sticked. So from what your saying you would be going from 4hi to 2hi, but I could be wrong on the shift pattern.

Other than pulling covers or draining fluids its going to be difficult to diagnose the problem without being there in person. Maybe try and put the vehicle on jack stands so all the tires are off the ground and see if you can get the vehicle to recreate the noise while its sitting above the ground where you can look under it and possibly locate the noise.

If you had some gear rattling sound, it could be that the nut on the back of the transmission output gear is loose. Actually that is unlikely, but it happened to me once.
