Well, the engine swap is complete, and the new 304 is a runner! It was basicly a sight unseen purchase, but I didn't have many choices. I have to say, that in 35 years of pulling engines, this was by far the easiest. I did it by myself in an RV park, with nothing but basic hand tools and a rental engine hoist.
The new engine has a mild(!) cam and fenderwell headers. I didn't want either, but for $250, I wasn't going to complain a whole lot. After the swap, I fired it up (no mufflers yet), and I have to admit, the headers and cam DO give it an, uh, interesting sound. Like you can count the cylinders firing. Now the next phase will be a rebuild kit for the Holley carb. it sounds rough, and it runs so rich that it smokes. At least I HOPE that's what the smoke is. It just doesn't look blue enough to be a smoker.
I want to thank everyone on this board for all the help and advice. And if ANYONE knows where I can get a front driveline cheap, let me know!

Keep the cam, M 318 got a mild cam and it just sounds soo cool idling with the rough out of time gallop. That and the xtra power is cool too:)

Oh, there was no question of getting rid of it! I just never intended to build a hot rod. This wasn't a mod, or a hop up, but mearly a repair. The only reason I used the headers instead of selling them was because my origonal exhaust system literally fell apart taking the old engine out.
This Jeep is my only car, so I had to have it running ASAP. Now, all I have to do is get some collector adapters and put the grill back on, and I'm good to go!
