When Delco Starter

When if ever were Delco starters used on our V6 CJs? Mine is a '70 but came with a Prestolite. Just curious.

Maybe this should be in the restoration or another section. Admin - Please feel free to move it if necessary.

 

Mine (1971) had a Delco starter on it when I got it back in 1992. I don't know if it was original. I doubt that it was the original starter seeing as how there was about 140,000 miles on it when I got it, but one never knows with these old vehicles.

 

Thanks for the info. Mike. I think one way of telling is the size wire going to the solenoid assuming the wiring is original. The Prestolite used 16 gauge (light blue) and the FSM alludes to 12 gauge (purple) for a Delco installation. It's also interesting that the factory might have or probably did take advantage of the extra terminal on the starter to provide more power to the distributor at startup. If so, you might see two 14 gauge wires (light green) going to the positive terminal on the distributor.

 

Well based on your info mine would have been factory as the color coding of the wires matched what you said. They were changed about a 1 1/2 years ago when I finally rewired my jeep completely.

Interesting Mike. Prestolite? Is that who made the Motorola unit? I doubt the factory made the change that early but you never know. Do you have the wiring setup I described earlier?

 

Mine had the Prestolite distributor, Motorola 35amp alternator and Delco starter.

Exactly what I was thinking. '71 was the last year for the V6 and anything sitting in inventory may have been fair game.

 

No I think it was a matter of what they bought in quantity for the cheapest. If Delco gave them a better deal on Starters than say Prestolite then thats what they bought. They do the same thing today but you don't notice it as much. Sheetmetal and such was run in large batches to avoid having 1 stamping machine for each part. Electrical parts are usually bought from outside sources for alot of companies .

 

I thought all earlier V6s came with Delco starters and later ones had Prestolites, but who knows. Mcruff's Jeep proved that wrong. My '66 came with a Delco distributor and a Delco starter.

 

My 69 had a Prestolite starter, Delco distributor, and Motorola alternator

 

Beeser, well the old memory just ain't what it used to be.thanks for reminding me in a nice way.yes the alternator was the motorola. i am currently parting out a '68 jeepster with same equipment.

same here. guessing it was a year to year supplier thing.

 

I used to have a old Scout and it was ridiculous.
Napa finaly said just bring in your old parts so we can try to figure it out.
looked like IH was just scrounging parts.
