Okay, it's time for my first stupid question: After driving my new jeep for two weeks, I decided it was time to see if the transfer case even works. There wasn't much point in it since I don't have a front driveline. So I took the boot off and saw that the rig was permanently in 4-hi because the selecter couldn't move far enough forward. My immeadiate solution was to sawsall the hole a little more. My question is this: Is the selector too far forward? Is the position adjustable with the large tube mounted to the transfer case? I'm too new to know.

I'm not sure about your question but my transfer case sometimes takes a little love to get where you want it, sometimes. When its in 4 low, sometimes it won't come out. Try pulling as hard as you can while you slowly rock it back and forth in reverse and first. If it dosn't work drive a little bit then try it again. Don't know if that will help buts its my experience when my transfer case gets "stuck"

Has the dirvetrain been swapped that you can tell?? Reason being if its all stock it shouldnt be hitting the floorpan to require trimming. Are you sure its not already in low? As far as I know you shouldnt be able to shift it too much, since there are detents in the shift rails that shift between the hi/lo ranges.

Your '72 should have a Dana 20 transfer case. The shift pattern for a Dana 20 in a CJ5 is 4L (all the way back, almost hitting the tool box), N, 2H, 4H (all the way forward).

Uh, okay, now it gets strange. This shifter goes in an "U" pattern. Front to back on drivers side is engage-disengage front axle. The passenger side (which you can only enter if the drivers side is all the way back) has two positions moving back toward the top ot the "U".
Does this make sense? The PO said it was all origonal, but then he also said it had full lockers front and rear.
    Would more pictures help?

the U shifter design was used on Wagoneers and Jeep pickups; this also explains the large "tube".
Sounds as if the transfer case or at the very least, the shift linkage, has been swapped in. The U type is not factory on CJ models.

Okay. Mystery solved. It is indeed a dana 20 t-case, but the shifter has been swapped out. Maybe I can find an origonal shifter when I get to that point in the repairs. For now, i will just cover the hole with a rubber mat or something.

I like leaving that hole open. That way, you can see your front driveshaft when your driving. It reminds you that you forgot to unlock your hubs.

The "U" shifter was also used on some Jeepster Commando's. Could be what you have in there. Nickmil

Open floorboard won't (shouldn't) pass inspection here. I presume you're kidding (mostly) :coffee:
