Driving around today I found a CJ3A for sale. The owner doesn't have a title or know what year it is. It has a L head, plow and runs but blows a lot of blue smoke. It seems to have a 12V electrical system. It doesn't have a serial number plate. At one time it was owned by the State of Pennsylvania from the state plate that is rivited to where the s/n should be. The guy is asking $1500.00. There appears to be a lot of body filler on the sides hiding rust, the floors are sort of solid, the rear floor is diamond plate. I'm thinking it's not worth more than $500.00.
Any ideas on how to determine the exact year would be appreciated.

If it's a blue and white PA VIN plate, it may be a re-issued VIN. That means that teh original VIN was lost, and the state police verified that the vehicle is not stolen. They then process the vehicle for a new VIN number, which is 100% valid anywhere. It lowers the collectible value of the vehicle by about 1/2, but from your description of this beast that's not going to be an issue!

    Oh, and :UWOP:

From the sounds of it I think your price is closer for the condition.

does seem high on the price. by the time you get rid of the rust and sounds like re-ring the engine you would be better off finding one in better condition.

Went back yesterday to take pictures and it was not there. I guess he found someone that will use it to plow snow like he did.
