Finally drained the transfer case and transmission tonight (filling with 90 weight as I type) and the stuff was nasty. Came out like warm chocolate pudding. I'm guessing the previous guy didn't change either, so both were, well, disgusting. Anyway, I was curious as to how much oil I should expect it to take for each. I know to fill the transfer case first, and then the transmission. What should I expect? Oh yeah, I don't know what transmission I have, but it's a three speed, with reverse towards the driver's front when in the seat, and it's a two stick transfer case. Any information would be greatly appreciated, along with any tips or tricks for filling the transmission.

sounds like T90 trans and D20 transfer case need a little more info.

It would serve you well to search some tech articals on them both start with Willy's tech. I would think.

    Have fun :)

The novak adaptor site has good info on oils to use. look under knowledge base.

It says I should have a T90 transmission and a Spicer 18 transfer. I'm not the most knowledgable, but "they look right". I figured I had a T18 transfer case, but wasn't sure about the transmission. Thanks for the help and the link. It's now a favorite. I've finished with the transfer case and I'm currently filling the tranny.... man, wish that oil was about 20 degrees warmer....

    D18 Transfer Case, DANA 18. A T18 is a 4 speed transmission.

    Beginner's slip. :)

My T-14/D18 has a passageway between them that allows them to share oil. If I'm not mistaken, your T-90/D18 setup is the same. You might find after checking regularly that the transfer case stays relatively full, but the transmission will run low. I got comfortable after a while with just filling the transmission knowing that the fluid was running down into the transfer case; saves a step if you need to do it often like I did.

I like the tip for the hot water. That, or the day before, pour it into qt bottles and leave it in the truck for a day in the warm sunshine (yeah, here in the south it's still relatively warm in the sun) before pouring it in. I actually made a rig out of a coat hanger to hold the bottle while it drained into the tranny.

Thanks for all the help, guys!

Yup, drudging up an old thread. Need to change the tranny/tcase fluids, and replace. Sites are saying 80w under 32* and 90w above 32*. But everything I read here, all references point towards 90w. It's about 15 or so here in NH right now.
