Anyone run one? We've got a dirt circle track not to far from here, and I've got a chance to pick up a 3qt used unit from one of the teams for cheap. I've read that it will keep the oil pressurized relatively contstant, even when inclined and the pickup is sucking air. Is this true, or just a gimmick?

It will until it runs out of oil. An accumulator like you describe is basically a pressurized reservoir plumbed into the engine oiling system. When the oil pressure drops below a preset level then the pressure in the accumulator forces oil into the oiling system until the pressure raises back up past the preset level or the accumulator runs out of oil. When the engine isn't running you need a shut off valve to keep the oil in the accumulator from filling up the oiling system (generally the oil pan). These can be a mechanical hand valve or an electrically operated valve as both are available. For most applications, it's really not necessary and is one more thing to clutter up the engine compartment with the extra plumbing. They do work though. I've got one waiting to go on the Race Jeep but it's more insurance for the very expensive engine I have in there than anything else, and I got a good deal on one brand new. I don't think I'd ever put one on the trail Jeep. Nickmil
