Been having a problem with the jeep since the end of summer. started out just an ocassional problem, be driving along and the fire would just go out. Not dying clear out just falter them pick up and run fine. Got worse, more often thru fall. Got to the point that I couldn't go any where for fear of not getting home. Does not die but had to shift to low range to get in my driveway. I thought fuel so I replaced the fuel pump and filter and blew air into the lines back to the tank to clear that. No change so I cleaned the points and regapped. That helped untill the engine warmed up the started again. Sprayed contact cleaner on the points that seemed to help. Ordered pertronix 1548 for my IAY distributor. Installed it but could not time engine. No start barely cranked. Reinstalled new points started right up but after warming up to put timing light on the miss is back. What next?

Might have some water or other funk in the gas tank. Drain it and check it out.

Going to pick up a condenser and a coil to try this weekend. Will also try running it on a gas can.

I had a similar issue. Took me forever to figure it out. I had two bad plug wires and they were fairly new. I figured it out when I went to adjust something and got shocked through the spark plug boot end.

X2 on what Lynn said. Condensors and coils don't always fail completely, and when they start to go thay can act the way you describe. Good luck!

Here's where it starts to get weird...Tonite I cleaned the spark plugs and connected the pump to a can on fresh gas. No change. But I sprayed the points with some tuner cleaner and it will run fine for a while then start missing again, another squirt and it smooths out again. I can't see any oil or anything else on the points or the plate, looks clean and dry. Am I cooling something maybe? Still havn't got a new condenser to try yet.

Just to humor me replace the wire between the coil and points, then see if it goes away. :)

If the condensor is going bad, when you spray oil in the distributor, it will tend to cool it a bit and temporaily solve the problem...

Ding Ding Ding You were right on the money Steve. Dug around and found the old condenser that came in the jeep and that fixed it. Sure was cold riding around with no top tonight! Now to figure out why the Pertronix won't work. Thanks to all for your help. Happy Thanksgiving. Todd

Now I'm confused:? what is the purpose of the condenser anyway? I thought it just eliminated engine noise for a radio:?

It does reduce radio noise but the main reason its there is to reduce arcing when the points open, apart from the current going to the primary side of the coil the return path for the spark current coming from the secondary winding actually runs back through the points, no condenser = big spark = burned contacts :(.

I had a brand new distributer for our Bug a few years ago where the condenser was so bad it was like it wasn't there, the points burned out in two days :(.
