I have read the above thread and my question is: Will this hub puller from JC Whitney work??

I pulled the cap and the nut was a quarter inch from being tight against the hub!! Cotter pin was in place so that is how it was last put together
But since I was out rock crawling in the Jeep this weekend with that nut not tight and the hub stayed firmly in place I suspect the hub is going to be a BIG BITCH to get off. What I'm saying is it has been there a long time through a lot of driving with the nut loose and it NEVER came off. I am thinking this is not going to be fun!
    Suggestions and thoughts gladely accepted.

Thanks, I just ordered this OTC (OTC7394) Universal Hub Puller from Amazon. Very curious though about the nut on the hub not being tight. The other side nut was tight and seems like the hub will come off OK. Of course the tight side is the one I blew the wheel cylinder on !!!!

This is the item you need. Very beefy, and has the little wrench on the end to beat on with a BFH if needed. This one is from Snap-On, but your FLAPS should be able to get one for you for a LOT less...

There is also one on eBay right now for about $70 bux brand new. ;)

Thanks, that is what I ordered. $108 on Amazon. Since my hubs seem to be swaged onto the lugs I guess I'll use it often. My front hubs had been beat off and the holes were all beat up. But since this is just a trail jeep brakes aren't as important as a street rig. But I do need back brakes, 80 inch wheel base switches ends really quick on downhills!!

    A word to the wise......

Don't do it. There is nothing wrong with ten inch brakes......

If you really must swap out the ten inch brakes, take it to a JEEP dealer, or to a reputable 4WD shop that specializes in jeeps and have them do it.

I have pulled the hubs off of the rear before, and I'd replace the entire axle assembly before I'd do it again.

The reason to use a shop to do the job is that you will have someone to go back to when the hub spins on the taper. Getting those torqued correctly with no false torque readings is more art than science.

Take it to Jeep dealer? Right...

I wouldn't ever recommend that with one of our vehicles. They wouldn't know what to do with it. I'd never take our old air cooled VW to the VW dealership, nor would I take my 5 to Briggs here in town. When I had the TJ? Sure, but never the 5.

Take it to a reputable shop if you feel you must, but I wouldn't discourage you from working on your own vehicle. I've done it and never slipped a hub.

Worst case you end up doing what MOP and I did. Pull the whole axle with the hub intact and go to the machine shop and let them seperate it.

This is my "project/hobby". Working on it is the big reason I got it in the first place. I've seen the young mechanics at the dealer and they weren't even born when I was working on "old" stuff.
If I want to go wheeling in comfort and style I will just take my XJ, but the CJ is a lot more fun!
I'll keep you all posted on the project but it sounds like many have wrestled this "bear" before me, so it can be done.

If you have the puller like the one posted above, its not going to be that big of a deal. Just install the puller and beat the arm thing with a BFH until it pops off. if it doesnt work heat the drum/hub assembly and beat on it some more. Youre not going to break it.

9xs out of ten when the proper tools are used it will pop right off and not be a problem. If you like being frustrated and this is your anger release, then go ahead and beat on it till you feel all better. After all I think most of us work on these things as some sort of therapy.

I agree with the posts above. I was not trying to discourage you from doing it, but that one part (removing stuck hub from axle) is something I would consider paying to have done. I am pretty sure that the JC Whitney hub puller was an appropriate tool for most jobs, but mine (and Sparky's when he had that problem) were the 1 out of 10 times that it wouldn't "pop right off". If you beat it with a BFH, heat it, use a 3/4" drive socket set with 6 ft breaker bar, and it still won't come off, you should consider pulling the axle shaft-hub assembly and taking it to a machine shop.

I would have saved $100 in broken tools if I would have given in quicker.

I think an impact wrench would have been worth its weight in gold that day.

When I had to pull mine out and take it in, I didn't have the hub puller I have now. So I don't know, it might have worked. I didn't have the proper tools. Heck, I didn't know what they were then. I didn't have this website to tell me.

I ordered the "good" puller.....time will tell. It did say on the ordering page for Cadilacs and Jeeps, "order 2 extra arms" giving you a total of 5, or one for each lug. If it doesn't come off with the 3 and some heat I'll order the extra arms.

At high temperatures axle grease likes to smoke -- I've never seen flames from inside an axle hub, but I have genereated a lot of smoke.....

Seems to me just putting some gentle heat into the hub should cause it to expand a bit. Since I retired I seem to enjoy a challenge every so often. I just work on the Jeep until I start to get frustrated, then I walk away from it and ask my friends on "earlycj5" what they think!

Ever since I retired, I wonder how I ever found time to go to work.

When i tried to do this the first time i didnt have a puller and i didnt even know what one like this looked like. they dont exactally have it at autozone. I had to rent it from it from Iron Springs 4x4 in Prescott AZ and take my lumps from the one guy who was part owner who also told me i should just give up and part out my 2a. I didnt give up. The right tools make most jobs easy, so get them all, just so youre prepared....
