What lube should i use in the Ross steering box of 66 Cj5? There is fill "plug" on the box that makes me think something that pours e.g differential lube? However I also have a 47 Cj2A. It looks like the same gear box only smaller. It has a grease nibble that makes me think chassis grease. What should I use?

A cutting torch. That is to get it off and replace it wth something safer. Just kidding, I would use either heavy gear oil, or if that just leaks then put in grease. That is what we always did on the old hay rake gearboxes on the farm that called for 90 gear oil but were leakers. I am sure someone here will have a more percise answer. Zach

My '2A FSM calls for 90 wt but the later FSM I have on the bench calls for 80 wt.

With that said, I found myself running 140 wt to keep te leakage to a minimum before I rebuilt my Ross box. Some folks like to replace the fill plug with a zerk fitting and use chassis grease, but it all gets pushed out of the way on the first couple of turns of the wheel and then you have very little lube left.

Went back and looked it up. FSM recommends 80 wt. My mistake  140 wt. is the knuckles.
