I'm rebuilding a sm465 and am looking for a good repair manual. I haven't rebuilt one of these before so the more complete the better.

You'll find exploded views of them and instructions in any manual that covers Chevy trucks from 1973-1986. The instructions in Chiltons and Haynes are pretty useless, unless you have all of the special factory tools. You'll see lots of this:

"3. Use bearing removal tool J-5670641 to remove outer input shaft bearing.

    4. Use input shaft removal tool J-78964511 to remove input shaft."

Etc. etc. They aren't much help for step by step instructions if all you have is the usual assortment of mechanics tools. If you've ever rebuilt a manual trans before (any manual) all the same basic principals apply, and with the exploded view you'll be ok. If you've never done any tranny work...I don't know a good step by step instruction set. You might just try searching the web...I've found good instructions on doing an NP205 transfer case, and T-5 5 speed tranny that way.

There is a trick to getting the top cover off and on. You will need to remove the shift lever and position the reverse slider in the half way position, this will allow the top to come off.
The lower front bearing goes on after the bottom shaft is installed. It is also much easier to work on with the PTO ports open. This beast is heavy so make sure you have some means of securing it to a table or something. Watch your fingers. The top bearings can be taken out by tapping the upper shaft toward the front (with a rubber mallet) after the retainer and rear cover are removed.
I don't have a manual or know of one, I used the exploded drawing when I rebuilt Coby's.
    Good luck!!

They are a heavy bugger! Easiest thing to do for supporting it might be building a little 2x4 frame to hold it upright. I never had a table strong enough to put one on, so I just had to mess with it on the floor of the garage.

I put Cobys on my workbench and did exactly what you said, built a little wooden frame to support it.
