Looking for input on this one...I'm ready to fire up my swapped-in 225 but the starter turns the motor slowly a couple of times and then nothing. If I let it sit and charge some, it'll do the same thing again. The starter is new, but the battery was low, so I'm boosting it off my truck. It acts like a dead battery, but I'm boosting it, so it should go, right?

Motor history for diagnosis (if it helps): '68 225 V6 running when pulled in August, put in new gaskets and timing gear, primed the oil pump with vasoline and pressurized the oil system with a drill last week, tried to start yesterday. Motor spun freely in stand when the timing was set.

    Some possibilities:
Bad batt cable connections; corrosion inside the batt cable wires creating high resistance; tired, low torque starter.
Is this a recent change with this starter?

Instead of jumping, swap batteries, see if that changes the problem. Could be a shorted cell in the Jeep batt, and jumping it still doesn't deliver enough current to the starter.

What Lynn said. Start with the simple/cheap first. Mine did that a couple weeks ago. Starter cable connection to the solenoid was loose.

I'm really hoping it's the battery, and that makes the most sense to me, but I wanted to hear your input. The starter is new, as is the remote starter solenoid. The cables were new in 2004, as was the battery. Except that the battery is now cronically low (reads 8 - 10 volts when left overnight unhooked). I don't run the Jeep in the winter, and it has sat unhooked for two Maine winters, so it could be toast.

I know you said the starter was new but I have had bad new starters before, I always have the parts store put on the machine they have and try it before I take it. I have even had them give me the wrong starter before and it bolted up ok but when engaged it would be in bind and not spin right. A bad armeture and or bad feild coils in starter not letting enough juice run through them to get the job done, Solinoid could be bad and not letting all the power to get through to.I have had a battery with the side mount cables that the hole was not deep enough and the cable would not make a good connection until I ground the end of the cable bolt down.

Booster cables, unless they are made from very heavy welding cable, pass only a fraction of the amperage that the vehicle battery cables do. I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that if you put a good battery in there it will spin just fine. ;)

    The plot may have thickened.
After charging the battery a bit, it reads 11.32 +/- volts. Turning the key to the on/run position (without trying to crank over the motor) the voltage drops to 2.3 +/- and at the same time the voltage at the coil is 1.3 +/-
So now I'm tired and confused...but that's nothing new...
