Ok I can't seem to fit a normal spark plug socket into the recess in the head where the plugs are.

I resorted to an old Honda 90 tool kit spark plug wrench that had a very thin wall.........almost too thin.

It worked on all but the back plug on the driver side, just couldn't get to it with the heater core there.

If you have seen a motorcycle tool kit you know that it is a 2-way socket that you slide a screwdriver through to use. It is 13/16 on one end and 9/16" on the other.

So my idea is to weld a 1/2", 3/8" drive socket into the small end so I can attach a ratchet to it.

Am I missing something here or is a modified socket really necessary?

So I did the search AFTER I posted.
I see that others have had the same problem.
I will try my modified socket idea for now and when I get my bench grinder (it's on the long list of stuff I figure I'm gonna needR) ) I will grind down a socket.

I had that problem and ground one down to fit. Then I painted it the color of my JEEP and wrote Jeep plug socket on it so it never got mistaken for anything else.

Similar deal here: took my normal one (fairly thick sidewalls) with me to Autozone, dug through their selection and found a cheaper quality one that had thinner walls. Works like a champ.

This seems to be one of those cases where the factory changed the drill size that they cleared the spark plug hole with. I have 2 sets of heads, one fits fine with a thick walled plug socket the other doesn't. I have a thin walled Craftsman spark plug socket that has the universal built in, it works great but I'm not sure Sears still sells these, I haven't seen them in the stores in years.
