Ive seen Steve Lane's write up on the front disk conversion for the D27 w/ drums. Does anyone have a picture of the caliper mounting brackets that uses? He doesn't seem to have a good picture of them out of the vehicle.

    Thanks,
    Josh

    Josh-

I was going to run down to the garage and take pictures of the extra pair I have, but that picture is exactly the same. All the used ones I have seen are in about the same rusty condition, I was going to try and use the electrolysis method to clean mine up before doing the rear disc conversion.

Give em a yell if you get stuck along the way and I'l do my best to e-help!

I wasnt too worried about the rust. Just looking for a real good close up pic to see if the ones I have are correct. Also to see if there are any other parts, small or otherwise that are needed with these for installation.

Here's a couple of pics of the mounts installed one front and one rear. I got mne from Dundee Auto parts in Ohio. I believe they ship. I got 4 for $50.00. I removed the dust shields.

Here are some close up pics of the ones I have. I noticed that the ones in the pic supplied by complete off road there are notches and holes on the outer edge that mine do not have. Does anyone know what these are for? Important or not? I cant seem to attach the pics, too big or something.

Mine were slightly different in that the whole thing was a solid cast unit; no dust shield to remove. I used a wire wheel mounted to my Makita angle grinder. Cleaned up good. The only variation from the write up that I had to do was shim the rotor out from the bracket about a fat 1/8" with a thicker Timken bearing race.

    JayHawk,
That looks like a pic of a carb mounting gasket. Dang, I wish I could figure out how to attach these pics!

My fronts had the piddly little sheetmetal dust shields on them, but the welds were cracked so I just ground them off. Either type will work just fine.

As for the rotor spacing, depending on the vintage and lineage of the original hubs, it may be necessary to change out the inner bearing races as Jayhawkclint mentioned.

Some day I'm going to update that article with better part numbers. You have the part numbers for those thicker races anyone?

    w3srl,
No, I thought your write up was awesome. Its just that I couldnt see paying $50 for 2 used brackets, do I went to the bone yard and got some caliper mounts for a 76 Chevy pickup 4x4. I have pictures I'm trying to attach with little success. They are identical to the ones in the picture completeoffroad has in their picture, except on the outer edge there is no extra notch and hole (about 90 deg from the caliper mount area) I need to know if this is important.

If you're looking in my photobucket, then yes, that is a throttle plate gasket for a 2G. That's just my sig line. Prolly have to search through my album for a shot of the bracket.

Thicker inner race is Timken part number LM501311.

Great write up, by the way.

If you have a pick and pull in your hometown, I highly recommend just going and grabbing the brackets, calipers, hoses, and banjo bolts off of a pre '87 Chevy 4x4 1/2 ton as described. I don't have a pick and pull here in Lawrence, so I paid $40 for a pair of brackets and bought most of the rest of the parts at NAPA. Quadratec had the best price I could find on rotors, but I read someone here recently say they found a pair for ~$30, IIRC.

EDIT - Here, check this pic out. Notice all the way around the rotor how thick the bracket is? It is about a 3/16" or 1/4" cast bracket/dust bracket all the way around. No stitch welding, just one solid unit.

No harm, no foul. ;) I agree on the $$ thing, btu unfortunately, there just aren't any good boneyards withing an hour's drive from me any more. By the time I figure in the gas and my time, it's usually cheaper and a lot less hassle to mail-order stuff.

An no, the hole and notch don't mean a hill of beans.

yeah sometimes I come across the situation where its easier and cheaper to just mail order. Thanks for the info. Yeah, my brackets are the large round one piece type, with a smooth round outside edge except for the cutout for the caliper and 6 mounting bolt holes in the middle.
Oh by the way I priced out the parts on a website called rockauto. The parts to do the job minus the caliper brackets, rattle clips, mounting pins and minus the new master cylinder in the article(almost everything at wheel) +shipping came to $204 where I live. Shipping may be different elsewhere. Not bad though considering no core charges subtracted.
The only other problem I ran into was using the federated part # 103552 and the listing for 77-78 Cj for rotors. Both of these were listed as the 7/8 inch rotor for some reason?. Is there another # I can use to get the 1 1/8 inch rotors?

Think I paid the same at Quadratec, IIRC. That was in comparison to a range of between $78 and $95 each at my FLAPS.

Wow, $500 bucks for an axle and they don't even clean up the used Chevy backing plates.

I don't think I have half that in mine for both axles.

You can also have them look them up for '75-'80 Scout 2's. Same exact bearing hub and rotor as the Jeep 1 1/8" rotor and hub. Nickmil

Ok, I have been out on the web trying to find the cheapest price for 1 1/8 disc's for the conversion. Anyone know of the cheapest price to be found, I'm in Houston Texas. Any one in Texas found a good cheap source for them?
