I have heard of putting a 4.0L head on a 258, is the performance trade off worth the money? also will the 258 intake/carb set up bolt up to it?

I have not done this swap, but would if I had someplace to work.

Those who have done the swap report large gains. It makes sense that they would, because of the design of the 4.0L head compared to the 258 heads. The 4.0L makes more power than the 258, part of that is likely from the redesigned intake and exhaust tract (including the head) and part from the Mopar MPI.

The later aluminum 258 manifold will bolt to the 4.0L head with a little grinding. There's a web page about that somewhere. You'll still have to use the 4.0L exhaust manifold.

    Here's a link with some links http://www.northeastsurf.com/4.0 head swap.htm

Looks like Tim Weaver's article is offline. Maybe it will be back. You can get to the cached page (sans pics) via Google http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache...m+Weaver's+4.0+Head+Article&hl=en&lr=&strip=1
I'd suggest you cut, paste and save it (I did) in case it doesn't come back online. It will eventually expire from the Google cache.

    Here's a couple from Pirate:
